Member of the Centre of Excellence Plant and Microbial Sciences (CEPAMS), a joint initiative between the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and the John Innes Centre, Norwich, UK.

I have studied legumes for over 21 years. The main thrust of my research has been to understand how legumes interact with the legume host plant, particularly the mechanisms of intracellular infection by rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhiza. My interests include the potential involvement of cell-cycle components in infection, mechanisms of attachment and rhizosphere colonization, and whether touch sensing is important for symbiotic infection, and common elements of both rhizobial and mycorrhizal infection. Recently I have expanded our research to include mechanisms for nitrogen fixation. Here we are interested in the special adaptations of legume nodules for N-fixation, such as the creation of the microaerobic environment, and the role of nitrate in nodule energetics. These molecular level studies of will show us how these symbioses evolved and how they were integrated into the physiology of their hosts.
